Race and Gender as a Fundamental and Powerful Concept

Project type

Online Presentation

Role

Presenter

The presentation asked attendees to identify a definition of race and gender, locate places in their curriculum or program where questions of race and gender were relevant, and then reiterate those definitions of race and gender throughout the semester. The goal was to create a safe space for students to discuss these issues and to engage them in conversations about the history of racism and the social constructedness of gender. The presentation was done via Zoom and utilized several active learning strategies, including break-out rooms, think-pair-share, and assignment revision, to keep audience members engaged and provide them with take-aways to develop after the presentation.

This presentation was delivered to college faculty and staff to address how to raise issues of race and gender in the classroom. Over 80 faculty and staff attended the online presentation with many following up after the fact.
